Question

Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions.

Fortunately, the WHO reports that some countries have continued to have major declines in T B cases; in Cambodia alone, the T B prevalence fell by about 50 percent. Due to diagnostic and treatment efforts, about 37 million lives were saved between 2000 and 2013. However, maintaining this success has mostly been complicated by HIV, MDR, XDR, the inefficacy of the BCG vaccine, false-positive screening tests, non-compliance to treatment regimens, the complexity of MT B, and the stall in developing novel therapeutics.

In some countries, like India, China, and Russia, T B rates are only dropping slowly and still remain high. To address this concern, an additional treatment regimen is undergone by patients called directly observed therapy short-term (DOT S), which closely monitors treatment adherence and completion, with the goal of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. With the emergence of MDR-T B, DOT S-plus was initiated as a more rigorous treatment strategy. The WHO drafted a Stop T B Strategy, which outlines six aims to be implemented by all countries to reduce T B on both local and national scales, with the overall goal of enhancing T B treatment, health care experiences, and research. It is the world's hope that at least some of these aims will be achieved in the near future.

In this race to combat a disease that knows no boundaries, it is necessary to have a conceptual and clear understanding of T B overall. T his can only be enforced if collaborative efforts among research, public health officials, primary care professionals, and the general public continue to push the boundaries of our current knowledge, mitigating the global burden of T B.

Which of the following words best expresses the synonym of the word ‘adherence’?

The correct answer is

Attachment

Understanding 'Adherence' in the Passage

The question asks for the best synonym of the word ‘adherence’ as used in the provided passage about Tuberculosis (TB). The passage mentions “directly observed therapy short-term (DOT S), which closely monitors treatment adherence and completion”.

In this context, ‘adherence’ refers to the act of sticking strictly to or following the prescribed treatment regimen. It means ensuring patients take their medication as directed, on schedule, and complete the full course of treatment.

Analyzing the Options for Synonym of 'Adherence'

Let's look at the given options and evaluate how well they fit the meaning of ‘adherence’ in the context of treatment:

  • Perseverance: This means persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay. While perseverance is often needed for treatment adherence, it describes the quality of enduring, not the act of following itself.
  • Separate: This means to move or come apart. This is the opposite of sticking to something.
  • Release: This means to allow something to escape or cease to hold or restrain. This is also the opposite of adherence.
  • Attachment: This means the action of attaching something or being fixed to something. In a broader sense, it can mean a strong connection or sticking to something. While 'compliance' or 'following' might be more direct synonyms for treatment adherence, among the given options, 'attachment' is the closest fit as it implies being fixed to or closely associated with the treatment plan, similar to sticking to it. Consider the idea of being 'attached' to a rule or requirement.

Determining the Best Synonym

Based on the analysis, 'separate' and 'release' are antonyms. 'Perseverance' is related but doesn't directly mean following the plan. 'Attachment', in the sense of being fixed to or sticking to something, is the closest synonym provided that expresses the idea of following the treatment plan closely.

Therefore, among the given choices, Attachment best expresses a synonym for ‘adherence’ in the context of following a treatment plan.
