Indus Valley Civilization: First Discovery Site

The Indus Valley Civilization, also known as the Harappan Civilization, was one of the world's earliest urban civilizations. It flourished in the basins of the Indus River and its tributaries, primarily in what is now Pakistan and northwest India.

Harappa: The Initial Discovery

Among the various significant sites of the Indus Valley Civilization, Harappa holds the distinction of being the first site to be discovered. The ruins of Harappa were first noted in the 1820s by Charles Masson, but it was much later that formal excavations began.

• In 1921, under the supervision of Sir John Marshall, Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), extensive excavations were carried out at Harappa.
• It was archaeologist Rai Bahadur Daya Ram Sahni who led the initial excavations at Harappa, officially identifying it as a major site of an ancient civilization.

This groundbreaking discovery at Harappa provided the first concrete evidence of a sophisticated ancient civilization in the Indus region, predating many known cultures of the time. The revelation of Harappa was crucial in establishing the existence and importance of the entire Indus Valley Civilization.

Other Key Indus Valley Sites

While Harappa was the first to be unearthed, other important sites were subsequently discovered, further enriching our understanding of the Indus Valley Civilization.

• Mohenjo-Daro: Discovered in 1922 by R.D. Banerji, it is one of the largest and most well-preserved sites, located about 600 kilometers south of Harappa.
• Amri: This site provides evidence of pre-Harappan culture and also shows transitional phases leading into the mature Harappan period.
• Kot Diji: Located in Sindh, Pakistan, this site also shows pre-Harappan and early Harappan phases, offering insights into the development of the civilization.

The discovery of these sites helped to establish the widespread nature and complexity of the Indus Valley Civilization. However, it was the pioneering work at Harappa that initially brought this ancient civilization to light, making it the first site discovered.
