Muscle Striations and Types

Muscle tissue can be classified based on its structure and function. A key structural feature is the presence or absence of striations, which appear as alternate light and dark bands under a microscope when stained.

Skeletal muscles are known as striated muscles because of this distinct banding pattern. The organized arrangement of contractile proteins (actin and myosin) within their fibers causes these striations.

Other muscle types are typically non-striated:

• Visceral muscles, also known as smooth muscles, are found in the walls of internal organs like the alimentary canal. They lack striations and are involuntary.
• Therefore, muscles of the alimentary canal, being visceral/smooth muscles, do not show these bands.
• While cardiac muscle is involuntary and striated, skeletal muscles are the primary type referred to when discussing voluntary muscles with clear light and dark bands.

Based on this, skeletal muscles exhibit the alternate light and dark bands when stained appropriately.
