Reflectance: Moisture and Soil Factors
Surface reflectance measures how much light a surface bounces back. For soils, key factors determining reflectance are moisture content and soil type.
Factors Affecting Reflectance
- Moisture Content: Water absorbs light energy, especially in relevant wavelengths. Increased moisture content leads to decreased reflectance. Drier surfaces reflect more light.
- Soil Type: Different soil compositions (like silt loam vs. clay) have inherent reflectance properties, but moisture usually has a stronger impact on reducing reflectance.
Option Analysis for Reflectance
To find the substrate with the highest reflectance value, we look for the one least affected by light absorption. This is primarily associated with the lowest moisture content.
- Silt loam, 20% moisture: High moisture significantly reduces reflectance.
- Clay, 36% moisture: Very high moisture drastically reduces reflectance.
- Silt loam, 0.8% moisture: Very low moisture allows for maximum reflectance.
- Clay, 2% moisture: Low moisture, but higher than option 3.

Comparing the moisture percentages, Silt loam with 0.8% moisture has the lowest value (0.8%).
Minimal moisture means less light absorption and therefore the highest surface reflectance among the given options.
