Elbow Joint Movements Explained

The elbow joint is a complex hinge joint that primarily allows for two main movements:

• Flexion: Bending the elbow, decreasing the angle between the upper arm and the forearm.
• Extension: Straightening the elbow, increasing the angle between the upper arm and the forearm.

Radioulnar Joints and Pronation/Supination

Movements like pronation (turning the palm downwards) and supination (turning the palm upwards) involve the radius rotating around the ulna. These movements are primarily facilitated by the proximal and distal radioulnar joints, although the elbow acts as a necessary pivot point.

Rotation Movement at the Elbow

Rotation, specifically axial rotation of the humerus or ulna relative to each other, is not a primary movement performed by the elbow joint itself. While the forearm bones rotate during pronation and supination, this is distinct from the rotational movements seen in joints like the shoulder or hip. Therefore, rotation is the movement not performed by the elbow joint.
