Understanding Material Requirement Planning (MRP) Inputs

Material Requirement Planning (MRP) is a production planning and inventory control system used to manage manufacturing processes. Most MRP systems are software-based and are used by production managers to determine the quantity and timing of materials needed to meet production schedules.

For an MRP system to function correctly and calculate material requirements, it needs specific information as input. The primary inputs to an MRP system are:

• Master Production Schedule (MPS): This specifies what is to be produced, how much is needed, and when it is needed. It is based on customer orders and sales forecasts.
• Bill of Materials (BOM): This is a list of all the raw materials, parts, and subassemblies required to produce one unit of a finished product. It shows the hierarchical structure of the product.
• Inventory Record File: This provides current information about the availability of each item in inventory, including quantities on hand, quantities on order, lead times, and safety stock levels.

Let's look at the options provided to identify which one is typically not an input for the core calculation process of MRP.

• Bill of materials: As mentioned above, the Bill of Materials is a crucial input. It tells the system what components are needed for each product in the Master Production Schedule.
• Purchase order: A purchase order is a commercial document and first official offer issued by a buyer to a seller, indicating types, quantities, and agreed prices for products or services. In the context of MRP, purchase orders are typically an output of the MRP system, not an input. MRP calculates the required quantities of raw materials and components, and based on these calculations, purchase orders are generated to procure those materials from suppliers.
• Inventory record file: This is also a vital input. The MRP system needs to know the current stock levels and scheduled receipts (like incoming purchase orders) to determine the net requirements (what still needs to be ordered or produced).
• Master production schedule: This is the foundation of the MRP plan. Without the MPS, the system wouldn't know what finished goods to plan for, and therefore, wouldn't be able to calculate the required components and raw materials.

Based on the function of each document or file within the MRP process, the purchase order is not a direct input used by the system to calculate requirements. It is a document generated as a result of the MRP calculation to fulfill the identified needs.
