Understanding Combustion Stages in SI Engines
In a Spark Ignition (SI) engine, also known as a petrol engine, the combustion of the fuel-air mixture occurs in several distinct stages after the spark plug fires. These stages are crucial for understanding engine performance and efficiency.
Stages of Combustion in an SI Engine
Combustion in an SI engine is typically divided into the following stages:
- Ignition Lag: This is the initial phase that starts when the spark plug fires. During this period, the temperature and pressure in the vicinity of the spark increase, leading to the chemical reactions necessary for combustion to begin. A small flame kernel is formed, but it is initially very small and grows slowly. There is no significant pressure rise in the cylinder during this stage. It is essentially the delay between the spark timing and the actual start of sustained combustion.
- Flame Propagation: Once a stable flame kernel is established after the ignition lag, the flame front starts to spread rapidly throughout the combustion chamber. The flame consumes the unburned fuel-air mixture as it travels. This stage is characterized by a significant rise in cylinder pressure as heat is released.
- Rapid Combustion: This stage is part of or immediately follows the flame propagation phase, where the bulk of the fuel is burned very quickly. It is the phase where most of the energy is released, causing a steep increase in cylinder pressure and temperature.
- After Burning: This refers to the completion of combustion reactions that may continue after the main flame front has passed. Some unburned or partially burned fuel may continue to react, releasing additional heat and extending the high-pressure period. This stage can extend into the expansion stroke.
Identifying the First Stage
Based on the sequence of events, the very first stage that begins immediately after the spark fires is the period where the initial reactions occur and a flame kernel is formed. This stage is known as the ignition lag.
