Blood has several components, each with specific functions. Understanding these functions helps identify which component is responsible for transporting various substances.
Key Transport Functions in Blood
- Red Blood Cells (RBCs): Primarily transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues and help carry some carbon dioxide back to the lungs. They are rich in hemoglobin, which binds oxygen.
- White Blood Cells (WBCs): These are part of the immune system, defending the body against infection and disease. They are not primarily involved in transporting food or wastes.
- Platelets: These cell fragments are crucial for blood clotting, helping to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is injured.
- Plasma: This is the liquid matrix of the blood, making up about 55% of its volume. Plasma is mostly water (about 92%) and contains dissolved proteins, glucose, mineral ions, hormones, food substances (like digested nutrients), carbon dioxide, and nitrogenous wastes (such as urea).
Identifying the Transport Component
Based on the functions described above:
- Plasma is the liquid medium that dissolves and carries nutrients (food), waste products like urea (nitrogenous wastes), and a significant portion of carbon dioxide throughout the body.
- RBCs mainly transport oxygen, not food or nitrogenous wastes.
- WBCs and Platelets have immune and clotting functions, respectively.
Therefore, Plasma is the component mainly responsible for transporting food, carbon dioxide, and nitrogenous wastes.
