Fertilization in flowering plants requires the pollen grain to reach a specific part of the female reproductive organ.

Understanding Flower Anatomy

Flowers have several parts, each with a distinct function:

• Petal: Often brightly colored to attract pollinators.
• Sepal: Typically green, protects the bud before it opens.
• Filament: The stalk that supports the anther (part of the stamen, the male reproductive organ).
• Stigma: The receptive tip of the pistil (the female reproductive organ) where pollen lands.

Pollen Grain Journey

For successful fertilization to occur, the pollen grain, which contains the male gametes, must first land on the stigma. This process is called pollination.

Once landed on the stigma, the pollen grain germinates and grows a tube down through the style to reach the ovary, where the ovules are located. Fertilization happens when the male gamete from the pollen grain fuses with the female gamete (egg cell) inside the ovule.
