Wound healing is a complex process involving several overlapping stages. The normal sequence ensures effective tissue repair.
Normal Wound Healing Phases Sequence
The correct chronological order of the normal phases of wound healing is:
- Haemostatic phase: This initial phase begins immediately after injury. It involves blood vessel constriction followed by platelet aggregation to form a clot, stopping bleeding and providing a provisional matrix.
- Inflammatory phase: Following haemostasis, this phase involves vasodilation and increased capillary permeability. Neutrophils and later macrophages migrate to the wound site to clear debris, bacteria, and damaged tissue.
- Proliferative phase: This phase is characterized by angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and granulation tissue formation. Epithelialization also occurs, closing the surface wound.
- Remodelling phase: Also known as the maturation phase, this is the longest phase. It involves collagen remodeling, cross-linking, and reorganization to increase the tensile strength of the healed tissue. The scar becomes less prominent over time.
Therefore, the correct order is Haemostatic phase → Inflammatory phase → Proliferative phase → Remodelling phase.
