- Vibration: Sound originates from a source that is vibrating. This vibration disturbs the particles of the medium surrounding it, causing them to oscillate back and forth. Think of a guitar string being plucked or vocal cords vibrating – these are the initial sources of sound energy.
- An Elastic Medium: For the vibration to travel and become a sound wave, it needs a medium that can support its propagation. This medium must be elastic, meaning it can return to its original shape after being disturbed. Common elastic mediums include solids, liquids, and gases (like air). The vibrations are passed from one particle to the next through the medium.
