What is creativity?

JTET 2026 Paper 2 Social Studies Question Paper (01-Nov-2026)
The correct answer is

Ability to create or discover something that is novel

Creativity is the capacity to produce ideas, solutions or products that are both new and useful. J. P. Guilford linked creativity with divergent thinking, which is marked by fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration, that is, the ability to generate many different possibilities from a single starting point.

Originality lies at the heart of creativity, so the ability to create or discover something that is novel describes it best. A creative child may find a fresh way to solve a sum, invent a story ending or build a model from waste material, showing thinking that goes beyond what was taught.

Repeating an action again and again without boredom reflects persistence or habit, not creativity. Rote memorising sequences of numbers is mechanical recall with no new idea produced. Convergent thinking narrows down to one fixed correct answer, which is the opposite of the divergent thinking that underlies creativity.

Ability to create or discover something that is novel option is correct.
