Understanding Sunspots on the Sun's Surface

Sunspots are temporary events that appear on the Sun's surface (photosphere). They are visible as dark spots compared to the surrounding areas.

Cause of Sunspots

• Sunspots are primarily caused by intense magnetic activity on the Sun.
• Strong magnetic fields inhibit the normal convection process, preventing hot plasma from rising to the surface.
• This results in localized areas that are significantly cooler than the surrounding photosphere.
• The lower temperature (around 3,000-4,500 K) makes these areas appear dark, even though they are still incredibly hot.
• These intense magnetic disruptions are often referred to as huge magnetic storms.

Therefore, the dark spots observed on the Sun are a direct result of powerful magnetic storms occurring beneath the surface.
