A school is described in educational sociology as a miniature society. Its socialising power lies in the fact that a child there stops being only a member of one household and learns to live, share and cooperate with many unrelated people of the same age.

The growth of a sense of belonging to this larger group is the condition on which every other school activity works. Once a child feels part of the school community, group work, assemblies, shared duties and friendships teach tolerance, cooperation, leadership and respect for common rules, which is exactly what socialisation means.

The remaining choices are instruments that operate only through that feeling. A prescribed course of study mainly transmits knowledge. Activities outside that course and orderly conduct are valuable, yet both become socialising forces only when the child already identifies with the group; by themselves they can remain mere routine.
