Single Scaffolding: The Common Choice for Brickwork

Single scaffolding, also known as putlog scaffolding, is the most traditional and commonly used type of scaffolding for brick masonry work. It consists of a single row of standards (vertical poles) erected at a distance from the wall.

Key components and features of single scaffolding include:

• Standards: Vertical members placed at about 1.2 to 1.5 meters apart, parallel to the wall.
• Ledgers: Horizontal members connecting the standards at vertical intervals of about 1.2 to 1.8 meters.
• Putlogs: Horizontal members that rest on the ledgers at one end and are supported by holes left in the wall at the other end. These are typically spaced at intervals of about 1.2 to 1.5 meters. The putlogs support the working platform (planks).
• Braces: Diagonal members used to provide stability to the structure, connecting standards and ledgers.

Single scaffolding is particularly suited for brickwork because the putlogs can be directly supported by inserting them into the brick wall being constructed. This makes it a relatively simple and efficient system for building brick walls from the ground up.

Other Types of Scaffolding

While other types of scaffolding exist, they are typically used for different purposes or are less common for standard new brick wall construction:

• Suspended scaffolding: Used for maintenance, repair, and painting on the exterior of buildings at high levels. It is suspended from the roof or structure above, not built up from the ground for constructing a new wall.
• Trestle scaffolding: Used for indoor work or low-height tasks like painting or repairs inside rooms. It consists of movable ladders or tripods supporting a platform and is not suitable for significant heights or the heavy loads involved in building a full brick wall.
• Steel scaffolding: This term often refers to the material used (steel) rather than a specific structural type like 'single' or 'double' scaffolding. Steel can be used for single scaffolding, double scaffolding, modular systems, etc. While steel scaffolding systems are widely used, "Single scaffolding" refers to the structural arrangement specifically common for brickwork support, regardless of whether it's made of steel or traditional timber.

Considering the direct support provided by the wall under construction via putlogs, single scaffolding is the most characteristic and widely used type for brickwork.
