Question

The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 25 cm and one of the remaining two sides is 5 cm longer than the other. The length of the other two sides is

The correct answer is

15cm and 20cm

Given Formula

H2 = P2  + B2

Calculation

Let one side be x and the other be x + 5.

Applying the Pythagorean theorem,

H2 = P2 + B2

⇒ 252 = (x)2 + (x + 5)2

⇒ 625 = x2 + x2 + 25 + 10x

⇒ 600 = 2x + 10x

⇒ (x + 20)(x - 15) = 0

x = 15

x + 5 → 15 + 5 = 20

Answer  is 15 cm and 20 cm.
