Students struggling with dyslexia can be taught
through systematic phonological training
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability in reading: the child has difficulty linking speech sounds (phonemes) with letters, which makes decoding and spelling slow and error-prone. It is neurological in origin and is not caused by low intelligence or laziness.
Research-based interventions therefore use structured, systematic and explicit phonological and phonics training, often multisensory, in which the child practises hearing, separating and blending sounds and mapping them to letters step by step.
Strict punishment creates anxiety and does nothing to fix the underlying decoding difficulty. Texts of a higher grade level only increase frustration, since the learner needs material matched to the current reading level. Studying amid many distractions harms attention and makes reading harder still.
