When we witness a flash of lightning during a storm, we often hear a sound shortly after. This characteristic sound is scientifically known as thunder.

The delay between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder allows us to estimate how far away the lightning strike was. For every five seconds of delay, the lightning strike is roughly one mile (or 1.6 kilometers) away.
