Let's analyze the meaning of the word "key" in this context. When we talk about "key technologies," we are referring to technologies that are essential, crucial, or extremely important for something to happen or succeed. In this case, they are essential for the feasibility of future developments.

Now, let's look at the options provided:

  • Peripheral: This word means of secondary or minor importance. It refers to something that is on the edge or outside the main focus. This is the opposite of what "key" means in the sentence.
  • Pivotal: This word means of crucial importance in relation to the development or success of something else. A pivotal point is a turning point, essential for what follows. This meaning fits well with "key" technologies being vital for future developments.
  • Crucial: This word means involving an extremely important decision or result; critical. It signifies something that is vital or essential. This meaning also fits very well with "key" technologies.
