Question

Ramu starts from his house; moves towards the east; walks 90 m; turns right and moves 20 m. He turns right again and moves 30 m. Finally, he turns right and walks 100 m. In which direction should he walk to reach his house again?

The correct answer is

South-west

Take the house as the origin (0, 0), east as +x and north as +y.

East 90 m → (90, 0). Turn right (now facing south), 20 m → (90, −20).

Turn right (now facing west), 30 m → (60, −20). Turn right (now facing north), 100 m → (60, 80).

Ramu is 60 m east and 80 m north of his house, so to return he must move west and south, i.e. towards the south-west.

Hence, South-west.
