Question

\(\vec{r} = (\cos\theta)\hat{i} + (\sin\theta)\hat{j} + \hat{k}\), how much angle does this make with the positive direction of \(z\)-axis?

This question was previously asked in
NDA 2 2026 GAT Question Paper (13-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

\(\pi/4\)

The angle \(\phi\) that \(\vec{r}\) makes with the \(z\)-axis satisfies \(\cos\phi=\dfrac{\vec{r}\cdot\hat{k}}{|\vec{r}|}=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{\cos^2\theta+\sin^2\theta+1}}=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\), so \(\phi=\pi/4\).
