ISBN Digits Explained
The International Standard Book Number, commonly known as ISBN, is a unique numeric commercial book identifier. It helps in identifying books uniquely, making them easier to manage and order.
Historically, the ISBN system used a 10-digit format, referred to as ISBN-10. This system was introduced in 1970.
However, due to the increasing number of published books worldwide, the 10-digit system became insufficient. To address this, the ISBN standard was updated.
Current ISBN Standard
In January 2007, the ISBN standard transitioned to a 13-digit format, known as ISBN-13. This change was implemented globally to accommodate the vast expansion of the book market.
The ISBN-13 format consists of thirteen digits, which are typically grouped into five parts: prefix element, registration group element, registrant element, publication element, and check digit. The prefix is usually '978' or '979'.
Therefore, the present ISBN consists of 13 digits.
