The Prabandh has five Varieties or Jatis namely: Medini, Anandini, Dipani, Bhavani, and Taravali. The Jati having all six Angas is known as Medani, the jati having five Angas is known as Anandini, the Jati having four Angas is known as Dipani, the Jati having three Angas is known as Bhavani, the Jati having two Angas is known as Taravali.
Sarangadeva, in his significant work "Sangit-Ratnakar," details various aspects of Indian music, including the structure and classification of Prabandh. Prabandh is a significant musical form, and its components are known as Dhatus. Sarangadeva identifies four essential Dhatus: Udgraha (the opening part), Melapak (the connecting part), Dhurva (the main theme or refrain), and Abhog (the concluding part). An additional part, Antra, is mentioned as optional and was sometimes inserted between the Dhruva and Abhog.
Beyond its structural parts (Dhatus), Prabandh is also classified based on its constituent Angas (limbs or components). Sarangadeva describes six primary Angas of a Prabandh:
Based on the number of these Angas present, Prabandh is categorized into five distinct varieties, also referred to as Jatis. These Jatis represent different levels of complexity and completeness in the structure of the Prabandh.
The five Jatis are:
Sarangadeva establishes a direct relationship between the number of Angas present in a Prabandh and its Jati classification. The following table illustrates this connection:
| Number of Angas | Jati Name |
|---|---|
| Six Angas | Medini |
| Five Angas | Anandini |
| Four Angas | Dipani |
| Three Angas | Bhavani |
| Two Angas | Taravali |
Therefore, according to Sarangadeva's classification in "Sangit-Ratnakar," there are exactly five varieties or Jatis of Prabandh, each defined by the specific combination of its six Angas.
