A lysimeter is a scientific tool used for measuring the amount of water that passes through the soil profile, and importantly, the amount of water lost from the soil and plants to the atmosphere. It essentially isolates a volume of soil and vegetation, allowing researchers to quantify water inputs and outputs.
The primary function of a lysimeter is to measure evapotranspiration. Evapotranspiration is the combined process where water is transferred from the land surface to the atmosphere through evaporation from the soil and other surfaces, and transpiration from plants.
Lysimeters achieve this by carefully weighing the isolated soil monolith (including plants) or by collecting and measuring the water that drains through the bottom (percolate). By accounting for precipitation and irrigation (water input) and changes in soil moisture storage, the water loss due to evapotranspiration can be determined.
Based on the function and design of lysimeters, they are the standard instruments for the direct measurement of evapotranspiration. This measurement is vital for water resource management, agricultural science, and climate studies.
