Kalamkari is a vibrant and ancient Indian traditional art form. The name itself comes from Persian words: 'kalam' meaning pen and 'kari' meaning craft, literally translating to 'pen-work'. This art form involves decorating fabric, typically cotton, through either hand-painting or block-printing.

Key characteristics of Kalamkari include:

• Technique: It primarily uses a 'kalam', which is a special kind of bamboo pen, to draw and apply the colors. Block-printing is also a significant part of this art, using hand-carved wooden blocks.
• Materials: Natural dyes derived from plants and minerals are used, giving the artwork its unique, earthy tones. The fabric is often treated with astringents and milk to prepare it for painting.

Andhra Pradesh is the Indian state most famously associated with Kalamkari. Within this state, two distinct styles have flourished:

• Srikalahasti style: This style is primarily characterized by its free-hand drawing and painting using the 'kalam'. The narratives often cover entire cloth hangings, depicting complex scenes from Hindu mythology.
• Machilipatnam style: This style relies more heavily on block-printing techniques, often featuring intricate floral and geometric patterns, though mythological themes are also incorporated.

While states like Rajasthan, Odisha, and Kerala have their own rich traditions of textile art, folk painting, and craft, Kalamkari, particularly the style involving the 'kalam' and its distinctive mythological themes, is overwhelmingly identified with Andhra Pradesh.
