Understanding the Origins of International Relations

The field of International relations (IR) is a complex and vital area of study that examines the relationships between states, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, and multinational corporations, as well as issues like war, peace, security, global economics, and human rights.

International Relations as a Branch of Political Science

Historically, International relations emerged primarily as a sub-discipline of Political Science. Political Science is the systematic study of government, politics, political processes, and political institutions. It analyzes political behavior, power dynamics, and the allocation of resources and values within societies and among different political units.

The early focus of International relations was heavily centered on the state as the primary actor and on issues of war and peace, diplomacy, and international law – topics traditionally studied within Political Science. Concepts like state sovereignty, power, national interest, and foreign policy formation are central to both disciplines.

While International relations has evolved significantly to become a distinct academic discipline drawing on insights from various fields, its foundational concepts, methodologies, and analytical frameworks are deeply rooted in Political Science.

Why Other Disciplines are Related but Not the Primary Origin

• Sociology: Sociology studies human society, social behavior, and social structures. While social factors are relevant to international affairs, IR's initial focus on states and power politics stemmed more directly from political analysis than from sociological inquiry into broad societal patterns.
• International Law: International law is a set of rules governing relations between states. It is a crucial component of International relations, but IR is a broader field that studies not just the rules but also the political, economic, and social forces that shape state interactions and global events, often including the effectiveness and limitations of international law itself.
• Economics: Economics studies the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. International political economy is a significant sub-field of International relations today, but the discipline's historical origin was not primarily from economic studies but from the political concerns of war, peace, and state interaction.

Therefore, considering its historical development and core analytical focus on states, power, and diplomacy, International relations is widely considered to have originated as a branch of Political Science.
