In which rock Fossils are not found ?
Igneous
Rocks are broadly classified into three main types based on their formation process: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Fossils, which are the preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms, are typically found only under specific geological conditions. The type of rock plays a crucial role in whether fossils can form and be preserved.
The presence or absence of fossils in a rock type is directly related to the conditions under which the rock formed.
Sedimentary rocks are the most common location for fossils. When organisms die, their remains can be quickly buried by layers of sediment. Over time, these layers build up, and the weight of the upper layers compacts the lower layers. Minerals dissolved in water seep through the sediments, cementing the particles together and turning the sediment into rock. During this process, if the conditions are right (e.g., rapid burial, presence of hard parts like shells or bones), the organism's remains can be preserved, either by mineralization, casting, molding, or other forms of fossilization.
Igneous rocks form from molten rock at extremely high temperatures. Any organic material, including the remains of plants or animals, would be completely destroyed and vaporized by this intense heat. Therefore, fossils cannot survive or be preserved within igneous rocks as they form.
Metamorphic rocks form under conditions of high heat and pressure. While the original rock from which a metamorphic rock forms (the protolith) might have contained fossils (if it was sedimentary), the metamorphic process usually distorts, damages, or completely destroys any existing fossils. The heat and pressure involved rearrange the mineral structure of the rock, often obliterating the delicate structures of fossils.
Based on the formation processes of the three rock types, fossils are generally not found in igneous rocks because the high temperatures involved would destroy any organic remains. While fossils can sometimes be found in metamorphic rocks (though often distorted), they are most abundantly found in sedimentary rocks.
Thus, the rock type in which fossils are typically not found is igneous.
