Question

In this question, a question is followed by two statements numbered (I) and (II). You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and decide the appropriate answer. Among five trees, N, O, R, S and T each having a different height, which tree is the tallest? (I) O is shorter than only one tree. O is taller than N but shorter than R. (II) N is taller than T.

The correct answer is

Data in Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question while data in statement II is not

Five trees N, O, R, S, T have different heights; we need the tallest.

Statement I: "O is shorter than only one tree" places exactly one tree above O. "O is taller than N but shorter than R" names R as that tree. So R is tallest; S and T remain between but their ranks are not needed to answer "tallest".

Statement I alone answers the question (R is tallest).

Statement II: "N is taller than T" only orders N and T, giving no clue about who is tallest among all five. So II alone is not sufficient.

Hence, Data in Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question while data in statement II is not.
