Split Thickness Graft Components
A Split thickness graft, often abbreviated as STSG, is a type of skin graft used in reconstructive surgery.
It involves harvesting the superficial layers of the skin from a donor site to cover a defect elsewhere.
Graft Layers Explained
The layers included in a Split thickness graft are:
- The entire Epidermis (the outermost layer of skin).
- A portion of the underlying Dermis (the layer beneath the epidermis).
The amount of dermis included can vary, making it a 'split' thickness rather than the full thickness.
Evaluating the Options
- Option 1 (Epidermis only): This is too superficial and not typically considered a standard split thickness graft.
- Option 2 (Epidermis and dermis): This describes a Full Thickness Graft (FTSG), not a split thickness graft.
- Option 3 (Epidermis and part of dermis): This accurately describes the composition of a Split thickness graft.
- Option 4 (Epidermis, dermis and part of sub cutaneous tissue): This includes deeper tissues than are typically harvested for a standard skin graft.
Therefore, the correct components for a Split thickness graft are the Epidermis and a part of the dermis.
