GRSE Partners Kongsberg for India's First Polar Research Vessel

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), a prominent Indian shipyard, entered into a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian company Kongsberg in June 2025. This collaboration marks a crucial step for India's maritime capabilities.

MoU Details and Objective

The primary objective of this MoU is to facilitate the construction of India's very first Polar research vessel. This advanced vessel is intended to support India's scientific expeditions and research activities in polar regions like the Arctic and Antarctic.

Why Polar Research Vessel?

• Scientific Expeditions: Polar regions present unique challenges and opportunities for scientific research. A dedicated vessel is essential for long-duration missions, sample collection, data gathering, and supporting researchers in these extreme environments.
• Technological Advancement: Building such a vessel domestically signifies a leap in India's shipbuilding technology, enabling the design and construction of highly specialized ships capable of navigating icy waters and operating in harsh conditions.

Evaluating Other Options

While the other options represent important maritime assets, they were not the focus of the GRSE-Kongsberg MoU:

• Aircraft Carrier: India already operates and builds aircraft carriers. This MoU was not related to aircraft carrier construction.
• Deep-submergence rescue vessel: These are highly specialized vessels used for submarine rescue operations. The MoU's focus was different.
• Hospital Ship: While beneficial, the agreement specifically targeted the development of infrastructure for polar research, not a mobile medical facility.

Therefore, the collaboration between GRSE and Kongsberg specifically aims to develop India's capability in building its first Polar research vessel, enhancing its presence and research potential in the polar domains.
