Frosted General Lighting Service (GLS) lamps achieve their diffused light effect through a process applied to the glass shell.
Manufacturing Process
- The frosting on GLS lamp shells is primarily achieved through acid etching.
- This process involves treating the inner surface of the glass bulb with a specific acid (like hydrofluoric acid).
- The acid chemically reacts with the glass, creating a microscopic rough texture.
- This roughened surface scatters the light produced by the filament, resulting in a softer, diffused illumination and reducing glare.
- Other methods like using ammonia, ozone, or salt water are not suitable or effective for creating the durable, uniform frosting required for lamp manufacturing.
Therefore, acid etching is the correct method for frosting GLS lamp shells.
