While the Buddha's original teachings might have been in a Magadhi-related Prakrit, Pali became the standard language for codifying and transmitting these teachings, especially after they were written down in Sri Lanka around the 1st century BCE. The commentaries and later additions to the Jataka tales were also primarily composed in Pali.
