Understanding Map Directions and Orientation

When you look at a map, there's a standard way it's usually oriented. This standard helps everyone read maps consistently.

The most common convention for orienting a map is that the top of the map represents the North direction.

Once you know where North is, you can easily figure out the other main directions:

• North: Usually at the top of the map.
• South: Opposite to North, so it's usually at the bottom of the map.
• East: To the right of North. If North is up, East is to your right.
• West: To the left of North. If North is up, West is to your left.

Consider a map placed flat in front of you, oriented such that North is towards the top edge, which is the standard practice.

If North is pointing towards the top of the map (away from you), and South is pointing towards the bottom of the map (towards you), then:

• Looking from North (top) down to South (bottom), East is always on your right side.
• Looking from North (top) down to South (bottom), West is always on your left side.

Therefore, when a map is in front of you and oriented normally (North at the top), the East direction is shown towards your right hand.
