Understanding the Merger of Government Film and Media Units with NFDC

In December 2020, the Indian government decided to merge several of its film and media units with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Units Merged with NFDC

• Films Division
• Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF)
• National Film Archives of India (NFAI)
• Children's Film Society, India (CFSI)

These units previously functioned independently under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Why the Merger?

The primary objectives behind this merger included optimizing resources, coordinating activities, and developing a single window system for various activities related to filmmaking and preservation in India. By bringing these distinct functions under the NFDC, the government aimed to enhance efficiency and create better synergy.

Counting the Merged Units

As listed above, the four distinct government-run film and media units that were merged with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in December 2020 were the Films Division, the Directorate of Film Festivals, the National Film Archives of India, and the Children's Film Society, India.
