In an ecosystem, organisms are classified into different trophic levels based on their feeding position.
- Producers (e.g., plants) are at the base.

Ecological Pyramid Principle

This means that as you move up the trophic levels:
- The amount of available energy decreases significantly.
- The biomass generally decreases.
- The number of individual organisms usually decreases.
