Question

Direction: Read the following information carefully and answer the questions given below:

Eight girls: Dia, Gia, Mia, Nia, Pia, Tia, Sia, and Ria going on a Science Excavation trip from their school on two different dates of the month 16 th and the 27 th  of the months: January, February, September, and October. All information is not necessary in the same order.

Gia goes on the trip in the months which have neither a maximum number of days or a minimum number of days. Only two girls are going on the trip between Gia and Mia. Dia goes on the trip after Gia but not on an odd date. Only three girls are going on the trip between Nia and Sia, who goes on the trip before Tia. Pia goes on the trip before Tia but neither of them will go on the trip on an even number of dates nor in October. Ria goes on the trip after Tia.

Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and hence they form a group. Which one of the following does not belongs to that group?

The correct answer is

Mia - Pia

Logic Puzzle: Deducing the Girl Trip Schedule

This question requires us to determine the specific date and month each of the eight girls went on the Science Excavation trip based on the given clues. There are eight possible slots for the trips, combining two dates (16th and 27th) with four months (January, February, September, October).

Available Slots:

  • January 16th
  • January 27th
  • February 16th
  • February 27th
  • September 16th
  • September 27th
  • October 16th
  • October 27th

Let's break down the clues and build the schedule step-by-step:

  1. Gia's trip month: Gia goes in months which have neither maximum number of days (January, October - 31 days) nor minimum number of days (February - 28/29 days). The remaining month is September (30 days). So, Gia goes in September. Gia is either on Sep 16th or Sep 27th.
  2. Dia's trip date: Dia goes after Gia but not on an odd date (27th). This means Dia goes on a 16th date after Gia's trip. The only 16th date after any September date is October 16th. So, Dia is on Oct 16th.
  3. Gia's specific date & Mia's trip: Only two girls are going on the trip between Gia and Mia.
    • If Gia is on Sep 16th, there are two slots between Sep 16th and Mia's slot. These two slots could be Sep 27th and Oct 16th (Dia). The next slot is Oct 27th. So Mia could be on Oct 27th. Alternatively, two slots before Sep 16th are Feb 27th and Feb 16th. The slot before that is Jan 27th. So Mia could be on Jan 27th.
    • If Gia is on Sep 27th, there are two slots between Sep 27th and Mia's slot. The slot after Sep 27th is Oct 16th (Dia). Only one slot after Gia is available before Oct 27th. So Mia must be before Gia. Two slots before Sep 27th are Sep 16th and Feb 27th. The slot before that is Feb 16th. So Mia could be on Feb 16th. Alternatively, two slots before Feb 16th are Feb 27th and Jan 27th. The slot before that is Jan 16th. So Mia could be on Jan 16th.

Let's look at the clue about Pia and Tia. Pia goes before Tia but neither goes on an even date (16th) nor in October. So Pia and Tia go on the 27th, not in October. Possible 27th dates (not Oct): Jan 27th, Feb 27th, Sep 27th.

Consider the possibility where Mia is on a 16th (Feb 16th or Jan 16th). If Mia is Feb 16th (Case Gia Sep 27th): Slots used: Feb 16th (Mia), Sep 27th (Gia), Oct 16th (Dia). Pia and Tia must be on a 27th not in Oct (Jan 27th, Feb 27th). Pia is before Tia. Possible: Pia (Jan 27th), Tia (Feb 27th). Let's place these: Jan 27th (Pia), Feb 16th (Mia), Feb 27th (Tia), Sep 27th (Gia), Oct 16th (Dia). Remaining slots: Jan 16th, Sep 16th, Oct 27th. Remaining girls: Nia, Sia, Ria. Sia before Tia. Ria after Tia (Oct 27th is the only slot after Tia Feb 27th). So Ria is Oct 27th. Slots used: Jan 27 (Pia), Feb 16 (Mia), Feb 27 (Tia), Sep 27 (Gia), Oct 16 (Dia), Oct 27 (Ria). Remaining slots: Jan 16th, Sep 16th. Remaining girls: Nia, Sia. Sia must be before Tia (Feb 27th). Both Jan 16th and Sep 16th are before Feb 27th (incorrect, Sep 16th is after Feb 27th in calendar order). So Sia must be Jan 16th. Nia must be Sep 16th. Schedule: Jan 16th (Sia), Jan 27th (Pia), Feb 16th (Mia), Feb 27th (Tia), Sep 16th (Nia), Sep 27th (Gia), Oct 16th (Dia), Oct 27th (Ria). Let's check clue 4: 3 girls between Nia and Sia. Nia is Sep 16th, Sia is Jan 16th. Girls between Jan 16th and Sep 16th are Pia (Jan 27), Mia (Feb 16), Tia (Feb 27). There are 3 girls. Sia is before Tia (Jan 16th before Feb 27th). This fits! This schedule works.

Final Schedule:

Month 16th 27th
January Sia Pia
February Mia Tia
September Nia Gia
October Dia Ria

The question asks which pair does not belong to a group. Let's look at the pairs based on our schedule:

  • Pia - Sia: Pia (Jan 27th), Sia (Jan 16th). They are in the same month (January).
  • Tia - Mia: Tia (Feb 27th), Mia (Feb 16th). They are in the same month (February).
  • Ria - Dia: Ria (Oct 27th), Dia (Oct 16th). They are in the same month (October).
  • Mia - Pia: Mia (Feb 16th), Pia (Jan 27th). They are in different months (February and January).
  • Gia - Nia: Gia (Sep 27th), Nia (Sep 16th). They are in the same month (September).

Four of the five pairs consist of girls going on the trip in the same month. The pair Mia - Pia is the only one where the girls go on the trip in different months.

Therefore, the pair Mia - Pia does not belong to the group.
