• Chest pain
• Difficulty breathing
• Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
• Low blood pressure (hypotension)

These severe and uncomfortable symptoms serve as a strong deterrent against drinking alcohol. Disulfiram is used as a form of aversion therapy to help patients maintain abstinence from alcohol as part of a comprehensive treatment program that usually includes counseling and other support.

Why Disulfiram is Used for Alcoholism

Disulfiram is specifically indicated for the management of chronic alcoholism in patients who want to remain in a state of enforced sobriety. It does not cure alcoholism but helps prevent relapse by making drinking an unpleasant experience.
