Question

Consider the following statements and choose the correct answer from given options :

I. India's population is larger than the total population of North America, South America and Australia put together.

II. Such a large population invariably puts pressure on its limited resources and is also responsible for many socio-economic problems in the country.

Options :

The correct answer is

Both the statements are correct, but Statement II does not give correct logic for Statement I

The NCERT geography chapter on population describes India as the second most populous country of the world and adds that its total population is larger than that of North America, South America and Australia put together. It goes on to say that such a large population puts pressure on limited resources and causes many socio-economic problems.

Statement I is correct: India had about 121 crore people in 2011 and over 140 crore by 2026, while North America (about 60 crore), South America (about 43 crore) and Australia (under 3 crore) together hold roughly 105 crore people. Statement II is also correct, since a huge population raises the demand for land, water, food, jobs, housing and services.

However, Statement II describes a consequence of the large population; it does not explain why India's population exceeds that of the three continents. So it is not the correct logic for Statement I. Hence the pairing in which Statement II explains Statement I fails, and the options calling Statement II wrong or both statements wrong fail as well.

Both the statements are correct, but Statement II does not give correct logic for Statement I option is correct.
