Question

Consider the following statements about the Rowlatt Satyagraha.

(1) The Rowlatt Act authorized the British Government to arrest and imprison any Indian without trial.

(2) In April 1917, Gandhiji gave a call for a satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act.

Which of the above given statements is/are correct?

The correct answer is

1 only

The Rowlatt Act (Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act) was passed by the Imperial Legislative Council in March 1919, on the recommendations of the Sedition Committee headed by Justice Sidney Rowlatt.

Statement (1) is correct: the Act allowed the government to arrest suspects and keep them in prison without trial for up to two years, and to try cases without the usual right of appeal — hence it was called the 'Black Act'.

Statement (2) is incorrect: Gandhiji called for a nationwide satyagraha and hartal against the Act in April 1919 (the hartal was observed on 6 April 1919), not in April 1917. In 1917 Gandhiji was leading the Champaran Satyagraha.

So only statement (1) is correct.

Hence, the answer is 1 only.
