Understanding Conditional Instability
Conditional instability in meteorology refers to a state where an air parcel's stability depends on whether it is saturated with water vapor.
It occurs when the atmospheric lapse rate (the rate at which temperature decreases with altitude) falls within a specific range.
Defining Lapse Rates
- Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate (DALR): The rate at which a *non-saturated* air parcel cools as it rises, approximately 9.8°C per 1000 meters.
- Saturated Adiabatic Lapse Rate (SALR): The rate at which a *saturated* air parcel cools as it rises. This rate is variable but always less than the DALR (typically around 4-7°C per 1000 meters) because latent heat is released during condensation.
Condition for Conditional Instability
Conditional instability exists when the surrounding atmosphere's actual temperature decrease with height (the environmental lapse rate) is:
