11
The Constitution of India includes a section that outlines the Fundamental Duties of its citizens. These duties are enshrined in Article 51-A of the Constitution.
Article 51-A was added to the Constitution by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976. This amendment introduced a set of ten Fundamental Duties based on the recommendations of the Swaran Singh Committee.
These initial 10 Fundamental Duties covered various responsibilities of citizens, such as respecting the Constitution, cherishing noble ideals of the freedom struggle, promoting harmony, protecting the environment, and developing scientific temper.
Later, another Fundamental Duty was added to Article 51-A. This occurred through the 86th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2002.
The 11th Fundamental Duty added by the 86th Amendment states that it is the duty of every citizen of India who is a parent or guardian to provide opportunities for education to his child or, as the case may be, ward between the age of six and fourteen years.
With the addition of this eleventh duty, the total number of Fundamental Duties mentioned in Article 51-A of the Indian Constitution became 11.
Therefore, currently, there are 11 Fundamental Duties that Indian citizens are expected to follow.
