Reverse Bias Condition

When an LED is under Reverse Bias:

  • The negative terminal of the voltage source is connected to the anode, and the positive terminal is connected to the cathode.
  • This applied voltage widens the depletion region at the junction.
  • Very little current flows through the diode, and consequently, no light is produced. In fact, applying excessive reverse voltage can damage the diode.

Unbiased Condition

If the diode is Unbiased, meaning no voltage is applied, there is no driving force for charge carriers (electrons and holes) to move across the junction. Therefore, no recombination occurs, and no light is emitted.
