NREM Sleep EEG Wave Identification

Electroencephalogram (EEG) measures the brain's electrical activity. Different stages of sleep exhibit characteristic EEG wave patterns.

Brain Wave Types and Sleep Stages:

• Beta Waves: Associated with active thinking and alertness during wakefulness.
• Alpha Waves: Typically seen when relaxed but awake, often with eyes closed.
• Theta Waves: Appear during drowsiness and the initial stages (N1 and N2) of Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep.
• Delta Waves: High-amplitude, low-frequency waves that dominate the deeper stages (N3) of NREM sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep.

The question asks about the EEG record during NREM sleep. While Theta waves are present in lighter stages, Delta waves are the hallmark characteristic of the deeper stages of NREM sleep (Stage N3).

Therefore, an EEG record during NREM sleep primarily shows Delta waves, signifying deep, restorative sleep.
