• Secondary Follicle: As the primary follicle grows, the granulosa cells proliferate and form multiple layers. Small, irregular fluid-filled spaces begin to appear within the granulosa cell mass. These spaces gradually coalesce.
• Tertiary Follicle (Antral Follicle): The small fluid-filled spaces observed in the secondary follicle merge to form a single, larger cavity called the antrum. Follicles at this stage are clearly characterized by the presence of the antrum.
• Graafian Follicle (Mature Follicle): The Graafian follicle represents the final stage of follicular maturation before ovulation. It is a large follicle with a very prominent, crescent-shaped or C-shaped antrum that occupies a significant portion of the follicle's volume. The oocyte is located eccentrically, surrounded by a mound of granulosa cells called the cumulus oophorus, which projects into the antrum.

The presence of a large, well-developed antrum is a defining characteristic of a mature, or Graafian, follicle.
