Question

Aganglionic disease of the intestinal tract which causes inadequate motility is termed as:

The correct answer is

Hirschsprung's disease

The correct answer is Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease (congenital aganglionic megacolon) is due to absence of ganglion cells of the submucosal (Meissner's) and myenteric (Auerbach's) plexuses in the distal colon and rectum, from failed neural crest migration. The aganglionic segment cannot relax, causing functional obstruction, delayed passage of meconium (beyond 48 hours), constipation and abdominal distension; rectal biopsy confirms it.

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are inflammatory bowel diseases, and diverticular disease consists of outpouchings of the colonic wall.

Short trick: No ganglia → no peristalsis → no meconium: Hirschsprung.
