Because only the best three sections count, it pays to build real depth in the three strongest subjects while still clearing the section cut-off in each of them.
Clearing the best-of-three sections is not the only bar a NEST candidate needs to clear. Two separate thresholds decide who makes the merit list at all: SMAS, the Section-wise Minimum Admissible Score, requires a minimum score in each section a candidate attempts, and MAP, the Minimum Admissible Percentile, requires ranking in the top 20th percentile overall.
A candidate can score well on the best-of-three total and still miss the merit list if they fall short of SMAS in one of their attempted sections, or fall outside the MAP percentile cut. Both thresholds apply on top of the scoring rule covered earlier, not instead of it, so a strong total score alone does not guarantee a place on the merit list if either threshold is missed.
NEST eligibility is set apart from the syllabus itself, but it decides who can sit the exam. A candidate needs at least 60% aggregate in Class 12 (55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), and must have passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025, or be appearing in 2026.
There is no upper age limit and no limit on the number of attempts, so a candidate can reappear in NEST every year as long as the Class 12 qualifying condition is met, unlike exams that restrict candidates to a fixed number of attempts.
