GPAT 2026 is for students who already have a B.Pharm degree, not students straight out of Class 12. It tests Pharmacy subjects for M.Pharm admission. The paper is split into timed sections, and once a section's time is over, you cannot return to it. This guide covers GPAT 2026's subjects, that time rule, and how a good score can also get you a scholarship, not just a seat. Read it alongside the current syllabus rather than a general postgraduate exam guide.
125 questions, five subject-based sections, and a rule that once a section's time is up, it stays closed. Keep the numbers below close, since the rest of this guide is built on them.
| Particular | Detail |
|---|---|
| Exam Name | Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) 2026 |
| Conducting Body | National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) |
| Purpose | Admission to M.Pharm at 800-plus AICTE-approved institutes, and eligibility for the AICTE/PCI postgraduate scholarship |
| Total Questions | 125, across time-bound sections covering Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and allied subjects |
| Total Marks | 500 |
| Marking Scheme | +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted |
| Duration | 180 minutes, split into time-bound sections with no return once a section closes |
| Mode | Computer-based test, English only |
| Typical Preparation Window | About 2.5 months, from the late-December notification to the March exam |
| Scorecard Validity | Valid only for the admission cycle in which the exam is conducted |
Most entrance exams let a candidate move freely between sections and questions. GPAT does not. The paper is split into separate, time-bound sections, and once a section's allotted time is over, or you choose to move forward, you cannot return to review or change an answer in it.
| Subject | Priority | High-Yield Topics |
|---|---|---|
| Pharmacology | Very High | Autonomic and Central Nervous System, Cardiovascular Pharmacology, Endocrine Pharmacology, Drug Interactions |
| Pharmaceutics | Very High | Dosage Forms, Biopharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Engineering |
| Pharmaceutical Chemistry | Very High | Structure Activity Relationship, Medicinal Chemistry, Heterocyclic Compounds |
| Pharmacognosy | High | Herbal Drugs, Natural Products, Plant Constituents |
| Pharmaceutical Analysis | High | Spectroscopy, Chromatography, Instrumental Methods |
| Biochemistry, Microbiology, Clinical Pharmacy | Moderate | Metabolism and Enzymes, Sterilisation and Immunology, Therapeutic Applications |
| Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence | Low to Moderate | Regulatory guidelines, drug law basics |
A correct answer earns 4 marks, a wrong one costs 1, a gentler ratio than it first looks, and it changes the guessing math in a specific way.
Notifications typically release in late December and the exam falls in early March, giving most candidates around 2.5 months, a tighter window than several other postgraduate entrance exams allow.
| Period | Focus |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 4 | Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry fundamentals, chapter-wise revision from B.Pharm coursework |
| Weeks 5 to 8 | Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Analysis, subject-wise practice sets, an error log |
| Final 2 to 3 weeks | Covered separately under the revision plan later in this article |
GPAT previous year papers reveal something a textbook alone will not: recent papers lean more on clinical application and image-based identification than older cycles did, so solving only very old papers can undersell the current question style.
With roughly 25 questions and a fixed number of minutes per section, the real skill is pacing inside each section individually, not managing one large shared clock.
| Mistake | Why It Costs Marks |
|---|---|
| Practising only with free-navigation mock tests | GPAT's real time-bound, no-return sections need their own pacing practice, a free-navigation mock does not simulate this |
| Spending equal revision time across all subjects | Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry carry the most weight, an equal split under-serves them |
| Ignoring image-based and clinical-application questions in practice | Recent GPAT cycles have leaned more heavily on these formats than older papers reflect |
| Assuming a GPAT scorecard carries over if admission is deferred | GPAT scores are valid only for the cycle in which the exam is conducted, a deferred candidate must reappear |
With such a short lead-in to begin with, the final stretch before GPAT 2026 needs to consolidate the three highest-weightage subjects rather than chase new topics.
A strong GPAT score does more than open M.Pharm admission, it is also the qualifying route to an AICTE and Pharmacy Council of India postgraduate scholarship.
GPAT has shifted over recent cycles from mostly factual, textbook-style questions toward more image-based identification and clinical-application questions, and preparation built only around older-style questions can miss this.
GPAT does not set one shared cutoff, the score needed shifts by which institute and programme you are targeting.
| College (previous-cycle trend, estimate) | Expected GPAT Score (out of 500) |
|---|---|
| Institute of Chemical Technology | 130 to 150+ |
| Jamia Hamdard | 140 to 160+ |
| Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research | 125 to 145 |
| Birla Institute of Technology | 120 to 140 |
| JSS College of Pharmacy | 120 to 140 |
| Poona College of Pharmacy | 115 to 135 |
| Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences | 110 to 130 |
The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research is one of the most sought-after destinations for M.Pharm, but a strong GPAT score by itself does not secure a seat there.
If one habit matters more than the rest here, it is practising GPAT's actual time-bound-section format rather than a generic free-navigation mock, since that format alone changes how pacing has to work section by section. Get the sectional pacing right, protect Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry first, and the remaining subjects and revision timeline in this guide carry the rest.

| GPAT Previous Year Question Papers (2016 to 2026) |
Ques: Can I move back to a previous section after time runs out on it?
Ans: No. Once a section's allotted time ends, or you move forward, you cannot return to review or change answers in that section.
Ques: Does qualifying GPAT guarantee an M.Pharm seat?
Ans: No. GPAT only makes you eligible for a merit-based seat. Each participating institute holds its own separate counselling based on GPAT scores, so qualifying is necessary but not sufficient.
Ques: Is GPAT compulsory for every M.Pharm programme in India?
Ans: No. Most AICTE-approved institutes use it, but some universities hold their own separate M.Pharm entrance process, so check your target institute's specific requirement.
Ques: Can final-year B.Pharm students apply for GPAT?
Ans: Yes. Final-year students can apply, though they must complete their degree requirements before actual admission is confirmed.
Ques: If I qualify GPAT this year but don't want to join, can I use the score next year?
Ans: No. GPAT scores are valid only for the admission cycle in which the exam is conducted, so a candidate must reappear the following year rather than carrying the score forward.
