Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test, also named UPTET, is a state-level examination conducted once a year to recruit primary (classes 1-5) and upper primary (classes 6-8) level teachers of Uttar Pradesh respectively every year. UPBEB or Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board is responsible for conducting the UPTET exam.

Uttar Pradesh Exam Regulatory Agency releases their updates on their official website - http://updeled.gov.in. Therefore, one can easily avail of proper solutions to their queries on the website.

Every year, over 15 lakh candidates appear for the UPTET examination. In 2019, a total of around 1,634,249 candidates registered, while 15,14,716 appeared for the exam. In 2018, about 17 lakh students appeared for the exam when around 18.25 lakh candidates registered. The aspiring candidates must solve sample papers to understand the papers’ difficulty. 

UPTET exam is conducted in two particular shifts for two papers, namely Paper I and II. UPTET Paper-I is conducted for candidates who decide to become teachers of Classes 1-5. On the other hand, candidates who wish to become teachers of Classes 1-8 require to appear in both the papers. Both the papers of UPTET are conducted on the same day in offline mode as pen-and-paper based tests. 

Candidates who qualify the UPTET exam are considered eligible for recruitment as primary or upper-primary (also called middle school) level teachers for the state’s schools. These candidates receive their UPTET eligibility certificate in due course after the declaration of their results.  Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak has announced that the eligibility certificate provided is valid for the lifetime.

Few essential eligibility criteria are followed for the candidates-

  • They should clear graduation in any discipline,
  • Candidates appearing for UPTET should be between the ages of 18 and 35 years,
  • Candidates should be citizens of these particular countries-India/Nepal/Bhutan/Tibet.

UPTET Pay Scale and Salary Structure

In Uttar Pradesh, the general pay scale provided to an Assistant teacher during their training period is INR 7300, which can be increased to the permanent teacher’s pay scale after they complete their training period. The salary of permanent Primary and Upper primary teachers are something between INR 9300- 34800 (without the 7th Pay Commission’s new increment). The Grade Pay for the Primary and Upper Primary teachers are INR 4200 and INR 4600 respectively.

Some key features of the PayScale are

  • The UP Government follows the 7th Pay Commission’s salary structure, which approves the increment within the teachers’ pay scale. Hence, the salary of a UPTET teacher revises every year with an added increment.
  • The increment is available twice a year- July and January, the candidates can choose any of them.
  • The in-hand salary differs from rural to urban because of the house-rent allowance.

Besides basic pay and increment, the candidates selected for the posts of primary and upper primary teachers are given many other allowances and benefits to enjoy their salary. These include

Deductions in the PayScale

Along with other increments, every month from the salary, there are GIS and TDS deductions. Monthly INR 500 to 1000 for Tax is deducted at source, and an amount of INR 87 is deducted for the insurance scheme.

For the new joining teachers, there is no deduction for TDS. It starts after a particular time of completion of their services. Therefore, after deduction of TDS, a primary teacher can calculate his/her salary as-

Salary + DA + HRA – GIS – TDS= INR 41000 (approx) per month.

The role of UPTET qualified candidates

UPTET Teacher teaches at two different levels in schools- 1st level for the (classes 1 to 5) and 2nd level for Upper primary (classes 6 to 8) level classes of state schools in UP. Every teacher must be liable for many factors, and a few of them are below:

  • To focus and educate students on the whole syllabus and abide by the National Curriculum Framework rules.
  • To work on the lesson plans of the chapters and plan and organize extracurricular activities within the school.
  • Make the scholars conscious of the complete information of the syllabus, structure, and curriculum.
  • To attend all the teachers’ meetings and also the training provided by the UP Education Board.
  • To plan Assignment, project work, team teaching, and remedial teaching.
  • They also got to beat the weak spot of the students so that they will build better in life.
  • They have to develop students' interest in art, craft, games, library, etc.

Headmaster in primary school: This involves promotion, so after putting complete efforts into the varsity, you become the headmaster within the grade school. It's an important post that gets handled by a responsible adviser.

A senior teacher in an upper primary school: After the headmaster, you become a senior teacher within the Upper-grade school. The Upper-primary teacher needs a high level of data for teaching students.

For an Upper primary teacher, one can be promoted to senior-level Teacher by completing the eligibility criteria.

Principal in an upper primary school: The last promotion stage is principal within the high-grade school.
