AFCAT/NDA/NCC/CDS 2020: Join Indian Air Force (IAF) and Make Career After Completing 12th, Graduation or Post Graduation

Candidates could make a career in the Indian Air force (IAF) in various categories like Flying Branch and Ground Duty which involves technical and non-technical staff through AFCAT, NDA, BCC, and CDS Examinations after 12th, graduation, and post-graduation.

Candidates could check the following section to know the different ways through which candidates could join the Indian Air Force after completing 12th, Graduation, or Post graduation.

National Defence Academy (NDA)

Male candidates who have completed 12th could join the Indian Air Force through National Defence Academy (NDA). candidates who were selected for the IAF in the initial selection will be undergoing a 3-year rigorous training at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla.

After the 3 year training, candidates will be going through specialized training after which they will be commissioned as Permanent Commission Officer and will be appointed as officer in any of the Air Force Stations.

Candidates should appear for the examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to join the NDA. 

Eligibility Criteria

Age At the time of the beginning of the course, candidates should be 16 ½ to 19 ½ years.
Nationality Indian 
Gender  Men only
Educational Qualification 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Final year students could also apply

Through NDA, candidates could apply for Flying Branch, Ground Duty (Technical), and Ground Duty (Non-Technical).

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT)

Through the Air Force Academy, candidates who have graduated could enter the Flying Branch in Indian Air Force (IAF).

Candidates who were shortlisted will be trained as a Fighter pilot or a Helicopter pilot or Transport pilot. Candidates will be appointed as Short Service Commission (SSC) in the Flying branch through the AFCAT examination.

Eligibility Criteria for AFCAT 2020

Age  At the beginning of the course, candidates should be 20 to 24 years old.
Nationality  Indian 
Marital Status Single 
Gender  Men and Women
Educational Qualification
  • 10+2 with at least 50% marks in aggregate with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects
  • Graduated in any discipline with 60% marks in aggregate from any recognized University
  • Final year students who do not have any backlog at the time of applying will be eligible to apply
  • Candidates who have cleared the Section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institute Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

Candidates could apply for the Flying Branch of the India Air Force through NCC as an Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ Certificate holder. Men will be appointed as Permanent Commission Officer and both men and women will be appointed as Short Service Commission through NCC.

Eligibility Criteria for NCC

Age  At the beginning of the course, candidates should be 20 to 24 years old.
Nationality  Indian 
Marital Status Single 
Gender  Men and Women
Educational Qualification
  • 10+2 with at least 50% marks in aggregate with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects
  • Graduated in any discipline with 60% marks in aggregate from any recognized University
  • Final year students who do not have any backlog at the time of applying will be eligible to apply

Candidates applying for NCC special Entry would be called for AFSB Testing at any one of the AFSB centers located at Dehradun, Mysuru, Gandhinagar, and Varanasi.

Combined Defence Services (CDS)

Male candidates could apply for Flying Branch through CDS where they will be provided training as a Fighter Pilot or a Helicopter pilot or transport pilot.

Eligibility Criteria For CDS

Age  At the beginning of the course, candidates should be 20 to 24 years old
Nationality  Indian 
Gender  Men only
Educational Qualification  Candidates should have graduated in any discipline from any recognized university. A minimum percentage is not required.

CDS examination is conducted by the UPSC twice a year for the recruitment of officer cadre in the Indian Air Force.
