The Union Public Service Commission or UPSC is maintaining a list of successful candidates in reserve besides the list of 829 candidates. There were 927 vacancies to be fulfilled through the UPSC 2019 exam.  Since a lesser number of candidates were selected for the merit list for the year, the statement was released by UPSC. According to the exam conducting board, they have created a reserved list as well in compliance with the rules and regulation of the exam besides the first round of merit list published which had 829 names. Also, they have mentioned further that this is a standard practice that has been followed for decades. The reserved list has an adequate number of candidates to handle and shortfalls that may arise due to the preference of some candidates. However, the list is kept confidential till the procedure is over in compliance with the rule 16(5) of the civil service exam of 2019.

The exam is conducted every year in three phases- prelims, mains and interview to recruit eligible candidates in various administrative position of IAS, IFS and IPS and other government departments.
